A quiet walk along the beach with a bench to rest on while watching the waves and the sea birds. Does anyone really need more when visiting California? Perhaps a camera, or a canvas and paints, and a packed lunch. A hat with a wide brim and sunglasses, as well, and mayhap someone to enjoy the day with. Forget Hollywood and Los Angeles with their scandals and schemes. Give me the scent of the ocean and the gentle sound of the tide lapping at the land. Parties and alcohol are second-rate next to the mystery of where, off in the unattainable distance, the ocean joins up with the sky.
I decided to step away from doing impasto with ‘A bench by the ocean bay,’ and I think it turned out very well. Even though it took me over four times as long as the other paintings to finish, I believe that it was well worth the extra time and effort. I admit that my first experiences with painting were with acrylics, which dry quickly and lend themselves more toward texture, so I have been following that same process for oils. Now that I have tried painting more smoothly, I find I like the look of it and want to try to create this sort of style in future paintings as well.
‘A bench by the ocean bay’ is painted using professional-grade oil paints on an 8-inch x 10-inch canvas board and mounted in a 10-inch x 12-inch floater frame. It also comes with a certificate of authenticity and a provenance report.
